Shields Valley adopts 4-day school week

LIVINGSTON (AP) — The Shields Valley school board has voted to try a four-day school week for two years, starting next fall.

The board emphasized the switch is intended to increase academic performance and attendance, and any financial savings are a secondary concern.

Superintendent Erik Wilkerson tells the Livingston Enterprise that up to two-thirds of high school students can miss class on Fridays while attending extracurricular events. He says teachers often schedule around the absences.

Wednesday's decision gives the board the option to scrap the four-day plan in February, if the board finds the particulars of class and bus schedules unworkable.

The board is scheduled to consider a proposal for full-day kindergarten at its January meeting.
