Hanson pleads guilty to federal stolen firearm charge
Kaine William Hanson of Havre pleaded guilty in Great Falls federal court in Tuesday to a charge of possession of a stolen firearm.
Hanson, against whom state District Court charges were dropped to allow the federal charges to be filed, is scheduled to be sentenced April 4. He is detained pending sentencing.
Hanson was sentenced in state District Court in Havre in July 2004 to prison for violating conditions of his release in a deferred imposition of sentence for the offense of deceptive practices.
He then was sentenced in state District Court in Powell County in 2005 for the offense of escape.
A district court judge in Cascade County this August gave Hanson a five-year suspended sentence for possessing a dangerous drug on Dec, 17, 2008.
Hanson was charged in state court in Havre in May 2009 after he was accused of, with another man, entering a residence in Havre April 22, restraining and threatening a man in the residence with a gun, and resisting arrest when law enforcement officers arrived to investigate.
The charges dropped to allow the federal charge to be filed were felony counts of kidnapping, assault with a weapon and burglary, and misdemeanor charges of theft and resisting arrest.
An investigation was conducted to identify the second suspect in the case, but a Hill County deputy attorney said when the charges were dropped against Hanson that no one else had been charged.
A man entered the Havre police department April 22, 2009, and reported that Hanson, who was carrying a gun, and another man entered his residence, in which two children also were present playing video games.
The men restrained the witness, forcing him into a bedroom and Hanson threatened him.
The witness eventually was able to leave the residence by a back door and reported the incident to the police.
Officers responding to that report found Hanson in the residence, along with the two children.
Hanson immediately ran to the kitchen and placed his hands behind the refrigerator, and refused to place his hands in the air when ordered to do so by the police officers, the document said.
Officers restrained Hanson, who resisted them during the effort.
The officers, who heard a metallic "clunk" when Hanson put his hands behind the refrigerator, found a pistol lying on the floor between it and a stove.
Investigating officers later found that someone had entered a residence, in which Hanson previously had stayed, through a basement window and stolen a gun matching the one found at the scene. The owner of the gun and the owner of the residence said Hanson had been "kicked out" about two weeks earlier.
The federal penalties for possession of a stolen firearm are up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years supervised release.
