Ice jams prompt Beaver Creek flooding fears

The up-and-down temperatures in north-central Montana have led to conditions causing the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory for Beaver Creek in Hill County.

The Weather Service website reports a flood advisory for ice jam flooding through 5 p.m. Saturday, Christmas Day.

"Ice jamming can be unpredictable, with rapid rises in stream levels behind a jam and rapid rises downstream if the jam breaks," the advisory says. "Anyone in the area of Beaver Creek over the next few days shold exercise caution."

According to the warning, water backing up behind ice jams led to reports at 4:05 p.m. Thursday that portions of the creek were running high and out of its banks.

The advisory means that stream flows are elevated and ponding of water is occurring or imminent, the site says.
