Hi-Line basketball roundup

With high school basketball games being played throughout the week, the 2010 portion of the season is now in the books on the Hi-Line.

Tuesday night saw plenty of action across the area, and on the girls side, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars picked up a big District 1B win over the Cascade Badgers. The Morning Stars jumped out to a 27-7 lead in the first half and went on to defeat the Badgers 54-37 in Cascade.

Falene Russette paced Rocky Boy with 16 points and Tennae Singer added nine points in the conference win.

There were also some important District 9C games on tap Tuesday night, and one of them saw the Box Elder Bears remain on their hot streak. In Hays, Box Elder pulled out a dramatic one-point win over the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds, 54-53. The Bears trailed 35-25 at the half after HLP went on a 21-10 run. But Box Elder clawed back in the second half and scored late to win the game and remain unbeaten.

Aricka Wolf Chief scored 12 points and Crystal Stamper also chipped in with 12 for the Bears, while HLP got a game-high 15 points form Shayla White Cow.

In Chinook, the Chinook Sugarbeeters grabbed an important district win, defeating 9C power North Star 46-40 on Tuesday night. The Beeters trailed 20-12 at intermission but stormed back in the third quarter via a 21-8 run.

Taryn Norby scored a game-high 16 points to lead Chinook. In the loss, North Star got 12 points from Shelby Lipp.

Tuesday night also saw the Chester/J-I Hawks earn an impressive 47-28 win over Dutton-Brady in Dutton. The Hawks got 10 points from Macky Sangwin and Larisa Lybeck and Kylie Richter each chipped in with seven points in the District 10C win.

On the boys side Tuesday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters pulled off an impressive 64-42 home win over North Star. The Beeters have senior forward Tyler Molyneaux back from injury and he was one of three Beeters in double figures against the Knights. Molyneaux and Grant Tilleman each scored 10 points, while senior Lane Schmitt poured in a game-high 18 points. The Knights got 10 points from Zach Anderson.

Hays-Lodge Pole also put on an impressive display Tuesday night in Hays, where the T-Birds crushed rival Box Elder 86-31. The T-Birds scored 48 points in the first two periods and led 67-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Four T-Birds reached double figures with Clifford Black Elk leading the way with 18 points. Tyler Roberts added 15, while the Bears got eight points from Dustin Standing Rock.

In other Class C action on Tuesday night, the Turner Tornadoes played very well on the road, but still fell to 7C power Roy-Winifred, 75-52. The Red Raiders took a commanding 23-2 lead in the first quarter, but Turner found its groove and scored 29 points in the second stanza. Still, the Raiders proved too much and won going away. The catalyst for Turner was Travis Daniels, who scored a game and career-high 39 points.

Tuesday was also tough on the Chester/J-I Hawks. The Hawks went to Dutton and were drubbed by the Dutton-Brady Diamondbacks 67-22 in a District 10C clash.

In Class B basketball, the Rocky Boy Stars wasted little time in rebounding from their first loss in over a year. The Stars turned around a Monday night loss to Malta and took it out on the Cascade Badgers. In Cascade, the Stars pummeled the Badgers 79-25. Cascade hung tough for the first 16 minutes, but the Stars exploded for 47 points in the second half.

Cody Abbott scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Stars, while Kirby Lafromboise added 19 points in the District 1B win.

The boys action continued on Wednesday night, and things didn't get any easier for the Hawks, who dropped another 10C affair, this time 53-46 to Valier in Chester. The Hawks led 22-19 at the half, but the Panthers fought back and outscored C/J-I 17-10 in the final eight minutes. Lane Harmon paced the Hawks with 13 points, while Ryne Tyler added 11.

Chinook and box Elder were also on the losing end of things on Wednesday. The Beeters dropped a 48-31 decision at Nashua, in a game that was being made up due to a snowstorm earlier in the season. And the Bears were routed for the second straight night, this time falling to Fort Benton, 81-39.

In Class B action on Wednesday night, Harlem had a rough go against perhaps Class B's best team. In Shelby, the Shelby Coyotes, coached by former Havre Blue Pony Tom Reynolds, took down the Wildcats 84-60. The Coyotes shot for a high percentage and were consistent, scoring 21 points in all four quarter to continuously pull away from the Wildcats.

In the loss, Harlem had four players in double digits. Skylar Speakthunder scored 14 points and Branden Hammond added 12.

The Harlem girls also dropped a heartbreaker to Shelby on Wednesday night. The Wildcats gave up a late run to the Coyotes and fell 40-37 in a Class B outing. Hyapatia Getten scored 15 points in the losing effort for Harlem.

But Wednesday night was good elsewhere on the Hi-Line.

Chinook pulled out a thrilling 38-35 win over Nashua behind 15 points from Taryn Norby and seven by Kayla Hanson. And HLP got a much-needed 75-29 route of Dodson on the road. The T-Birds had four plays reach double figures, including Coco Moore and Anita Denny, who each scored 16 points.

C/J-I ended 2010 on a high note as well. Wednesday night in Chester, the Hawks bested arch rival Valier 52-37. Trailing by two points in the second quarter, the Hawks went on a 19-7 run to finish the half and never looked back.

Jenni Ghekiere and Jocelyn Woods each scored 12 points for C/J-I in the commanding 10C win.
