Man gets jail for stabbing during Christmas debate

HAMILTON (AP) — A 44-year-old Stevensville man who stabbed his friend in the leg during a fight over the merits of Christmas has pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault.

Daniel J. Kohlruss entered his plea in District Court on Thursday as part of a deal that includes a five-year suspended sentence and 30 days in jail.

Court records say Kohlruss was arrested Dec. 24, 2009, after he and housemate Jerry Jordan got into a lively argument over Christmas. Kohlruss said he did not like Christmas, and Jordan countered by saying he enjoyed the holiday very much. The records say the debate escalated into a physical struggle, and Kohlruss stabbed Jordan in the leg with a knife, severing an artery.

The Ravalli Republic reports that Judge James Haynes also ordered Kohlruss to pay almost $21,000 in restitution for Jordan's medical expenses.
