Police offer ways to prevent break-ins

Rumors of a recent rash of break-ins have circulated Havre, but Acting Police Chief Gabe Matosich said Wednesday that, with a bit of prevention, people have nothing to worry about.

Matosich confirmed that there were two incidents reported about two weeks ago, in which someone entered unlocked homes in the middle of the night. The homeowners would not have known an uninvited guest had been there, except for the missing items that the perpetrators had taken with them.

While both of the incidents happened in the Highland Park area, Matosich said they were still fairly far apart, one on Rich Street, west of Havre Middle School, and one on Smithville Road.

There may not have been any more of these incidents reported in the weeks since, but Matosich still recommends that people lock the doors of not only their houses, but their cars as well. Every once in a while the police do get reports of car break-ins, where the suspects walk down the street, see if any doors are unlocked and take what they can.

Matosich also recommended that people call the police, at 911 for emergencies or 265-4361 otherwise, if they see or hear anything suspicious.

As far as what the Havre Police Department is doing, Matosich said that people may soon see more bicycle officers riding around and patrolling in the evening.

Without much evidence in the two past robberies, there are currently no suspects.
