Ponies take on M-Ettes tonight
It's a quick turnaround from this weekend's action, but the Havre High girls basketball team is ready to go.
The Central A Blue Ponies will play a nonconference game tonight at 7 p.m. when they host the Class B Malta M-Ettes at the Havre High gymnasium.
"We look forward to playing them," Havre High head coach Dustin Kraske said. "They are a really nice team. They always get up to play us, and our kids are going to have to match that enthusiasm."
Earlier in the season the M-Ettes defeated the Ponies 62-48, so HHS knows just what to expect the second time around.
Courtney Henry and Kori Kindle present two very tough matchup problems. They lead Malta's offense night in and night out and should do so again.
And for the M-Ette's defense, they should come at the Ponies in several different ways. Malta really pressures teams, but can also come out in different man and zone looks. They are a fast squad and look to take advantage of that.
Pressure defenses have caused the most trouble for the Ponies, but as of late they have done a better job of adapting. The weekends matchup with CMR was the latest pressure defense the Ponies found they could better handle.
"They mix it up," Kraske said. "But we are prepared for anything basically. Well at least we feel we are prepared for anything. I thought that after the initial wave we handled the pressure pretty well (against CMR). I think our kids are beginning to get more confident in what we are doing and are doing a little better job with it."
HHS will also look to better their offense tonight.
The Ponies have seen growing success out of Paighton Gilman and the high post, and if the opportunity is there, the Ponies will look to utilize that once again. And if Gilman can get hot on offense, the whole team will benefit. Getting Gilman involved early will open things up shooting wise for Jaclyn Evans, Kassala Holdsclaw and Peyton Filius.
The Ponies will host the M-Ettes tonight at 5 p.m. at the Havre High gymnasium. HHS also plays host to Lewistown on Friday night before traveling to Butte Central Saturday.
