Katie Wirtzberger of Havre hits a shot during the annual Havre Women Fighting Breast Cancer Golf Tournament last Saturday at Prairie Farms Golf Course.
For several years now, the women of Havre's golf community and beyond have been putting on the Havre Women Fighting Breast Cancer Tournament. It's a great event based on a noble cause.
And this year's tourney, held last Saturday at Prairie Farms Golf Course was another example of the community turning out for a great cause. Saturday's tourney was a nine-hole, 3-woman scramble, and 18 teams turned out to play the round, have fun and help raise money for breast cancer awareness and research.
And while a great time was had by all, there was some good golf too. The team composed of Julie Mariani, Patti Nault and Carol Culp took first place in the event, while the team of Ann Marie Chvilicek, Kathy Tilleman and Ali Ward finished second. The third-place team was composed of Melanie Gilman, Becky Wimmer and Barb Zuidema.
Congratulations to all of the women who participated in Saturday's tourney, and to everyone who helped put on the event, for such a great cause.
This coming week will busy at Prairie Farms too. Tonight and Wednesday mark the final night of the men's league regular season with the first week of the 2011 playoffs set for next Tuesday and Wednesday night.
Heading into tonight's round, Spencer's Hi-Way Bar has a comfortable lead in the Tuesday night standings, while Walleye Tavern is in first place on Wednesday night by a single point.
The top four teams from the second half of the season on each night will join the top four teams from each night of the first half in next week's playoffs.

Last Wednesday night saw Michelob Light score 22.5 points for high team, while Jim Kato fired a superb 3-under 33 for low gross. Dennis Donoven and Gene Harada shared low net with a 27.5.
