NAIA Wrestling Update: Lights end day one in 9th
In the second session of competition at the 2011 NAIA national wrestling tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the MSU-Northern Lights suffered another major setback. In the second round of the 149-pound bracket, top-ranked Northern junior Anthony Weerheim suffered just his third loss of the season. Weerheim was beaten by Baker's Jarrell Price, 4-3, ending his bid for a national championship. Northern did have a bright spot however, as true freshman Cameron Neiss reached Friday's quarterfinals by beating Adam Joseph of Concordia in the second round. As expected, Northern's Evan Hinebauch also reached the quarters with ease, and all 10 of Northern's grapplers will still be wrestling on day two.
The Lights are currently in 9th place overall, tied with rival Great Falls with 16.5 points. Notre Dame is out in front with 39 points, followed by Missouri Valley and McKendree. Former Havre Blue Pony Myles Mazurkiewicz was beaten in his second match Thursday by Tommy pretty of Campblesville. The match was a rematch of last year's 133-pound championship. The third session of the tournament gets underway Friday at 8 a.m. M.S.T.
