Some Havre High School students may soon have to make changes to their escape route, depending on what the city does with a nearby alley.
At Monday night's Havre City Council meeting, council member Cal Long told the council about a meeting last week of his Streets and Sidewalks Committee, where he and other members addressed complaints from residents on 17th Street, about high school students speeding through their alleyway.
Long said that the meeting had mostly centered around discussion about whether or not to post a 15 mph speed limit sign in the alley to slow the speedy teens, and that decision was approved by the committee unanimously.
After Long shared his solution, Mayor Tim Solomon said that the Havre Public Works Department had come up with an alternative that Director of Public Works Dave Peterson then explained.
Peterson said he would prefer to just make that alley one-way, going toward the school, as students always seem to be in more of a hurry to get away from the building than getting to it.
"To me it does two things, " Peterson said. "It takes care of the issue of students going through there. And it doesn't create a precedent of having everybody and their brother wanting to post their alley as 15 mph. "
No official action toward either option was pursued during the meeting.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, a few high school students in attendance — for a government class — offered their thoughts. They said that they were aware of residents in that area not liking the traffic in the alley and that they would be in less of a hurry if the school gave them more time for lunch, which they said they have requested in the past and been denied.
