Swearing-in ceremonies held

A set of new, and a few incumbent, Hill County officials took their oath of office Monday in the Hill County Justice Court.

Hill County Attorney Gina Dahl, Sheriff and Coroner Don Brostrom and Auditor Kathy Olson were the only incumbents coming back to serve this year.

Brostrom and Olson were unopposed in the primary and general election, while Dahl won a three-way primary in June and was unopposed in November.

Taking the oath for the first time Monday were Hill County Commissioner Jeff LaVoi, Treasurer and Assessor Sandy Brown, and Public Administrator Barb Salerno.

LaVoi, an independent, defeated Democrat James "Jim" Catt Jr. in the general election. Catt defeated incumbent Commissioner Mike Anderson in the Democratic primary.

Brown defeated incumbent Carrie Dickson in the Democratic primary and was unopposed in the general election. Republican William "Bill" Gupton withdrew from the treasurer's race after taking a job in Anaconda and moving from the county. The county Republican party later declined to nominate Wanda Larson, who offered to run in his place.

Salerno, a Republican, was unopposed in the primary and general elections.

Two of the officials elected in 2010 took office early, but were sworn in again on Monday.

Democrat Darla Dahl, who was unopposed in both the primary and general election, took office May 1 when long-time Hill County Clerk of Court Diane Mellem retired.

Audrey Barger, who defeated Cathy Chinske Huston in the general election in the nonpartisan race for Hill County Justice of the Peace, was sworn into office exactly one week later to take the place of Justice Terry Stoppa, who retired effective Oct. 31.
