Pony swimmers do well in Kalispell

The Havre High boys and girls swim teams didn't have a full roster for the season-opening meet this past weekend in Kalispell. But the Blue Ponies still got off the blocks quickly.

Havre competed at the Kalispell Invitational held Saturday at The Summit in Kalispell, and both Pony teams had a strong showing against Class AA teams from Great Falls, Missoula and Kalispell. The Pony boys scored 116 points to finish fifth overall while the HHS girls also finished fifth with 97 points. CMR captured the girls meet with 329 points while the GFH boys were first with 209.

Individually, the Ponies had some outstanding finishes, including a first-place swim by senior Megan Obrecht in the 100-meter breaststroke. Obrecht finished the race in 1:16.26 which was a full four seconds faster than any other swimmer in the field.

Equally as impressive was senior Evan Flathers on the boys side. Flathers came in second in 50 free in a time of 24.84 and he was less than a second out of first. Junior Nick Rhines also swam well in the same race, coming in fifth with a time of 26.57. Flathers was also sharp in swimming's premier event, the 100 free. He finished fourth with a time of 57.92.

The Pony girls also looked good in the 50 free. Leiza Reighard finished in the top six with a time of 30.21, good enough for fifth place. Megan Smith and Larissa Price also swam well in the same race. Obrecht also had a 10th-place finish in the 200 Individual Medley.

Reighard added a 12th-place finish in the 100 butterfly for the Pony girls while Katie Johnson was ninth in that event. The HHS girls also got good performance on Saturday from Jordyn Eastlick, Morgan Jappe and Jaden Korb, while the HHS boys got good swims out of Desmond Fialkosky and Derek Van Dessel among others. Fialkosky was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:22.37 and Van Dessel finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 7:51.19.

The Pony boys were good in the relays as well. Havre was third in both the 200 and 400 free relays, while the HHS girls also finished third in the 200 free relay.

The Ponies will be back at full strength for their next meet. HHS will host their only home meet of the year this Saturday when the Ponies host the Havre Invitational at the Havre Community Pool.
