Mariani to appear at mall Sunday

Havre native Marc Mariani has become a media star in recent months after his successful rookie season with the Tennessee Titans. He's making all kinds of public appearances, but friends say his favorite thing is to interact with young fans.

"He just loves dealing with young people," said Rick Sedahl. "That's just the kind of guy he is."

He will especially like the interaction this weekend, friends said. He will return to his hometown to sign autographs and chat with his hometown fans.

Mariani will be at The Athlete's Foot in the Holiday Village Mall, 1 to 4 p. m. Sunday, to meet with fans and raise money for some local educational institutions, including St. Jude Thaddeus, which he attended as a youngster.

Organizers expect a large turnout for the event.

"Marc is a very special guy, and people will enjoy meeting him," said Sedahl, owner of The Athlete's Foot and a longtime Mariani fan.

Everyone can get two autographs, he said, but Mariani is especially interested in the young people.

Up to 200 photos of Mariani catching a two-point coversion pass in his first-ever NFL game, a Titans preseason game in Seattle back in August, will be for sale at $10 each. The picture was provided by Mariani's father, Steve Mariani.

A big, homemade quilt by Lana Herman will be raffled off for $5 per ticket.

Herman said she has done similar projects for other local sports projects, but the Mariani project is special to her.

The Titans quilt will include an embroidered Mariani signature.

The tickets will be sold Sunday. People need not be present to win, she said.

Sunday's activities are designed to be "a community event for everyone," said Chandra Moomey, the mall's property manager.

She said that the Havre area has been lucky to have athletes and former athletes who take part in lots of community activities.

Sunday's event will have special meaning to the Moomey family.

"My 7-year-old, Connor, gets excited every time he sees something about Marc," she said. "He asks 'Is that Marc Mariani?'"

Connor will be on hand for Sunday's festivities.
