Pizza Hut to help Havre Food Bank

Pizza Hut is undertaking a program on Tuesdays in November aimed at helping the Havre Food Bank.

If patrons buying food from Pizza Hut also donate a non-perishable food item, the restaurant will donate 20 percent of the cost of their meal to the food bank.

"We read in the newspaper that the food bank was having a hard time, and we thought this would be a good way to help out," said Pizza Hut area manager Darla Owens.

If someone spends $10, for instance, Pizza Hut will donate $2, she said.

This will provide the food bank with what it needs the most, she said — food and money.

"Our customers will donate the food, and we will donate the money," she said.

Pizza Hut has often held similar programs for people in the area who are in need, she said, but they are usually limited to a single night.

In this case, she said, they decided to extend it to the entire month to provide as much help to the food bank as possible.

Penny Velk, food bank manager, said Pizza Hut's effort will help fight hunger in the county.

An increased demand and a cut in federal assistance has made this a difficult for the year, she said.

"This is really great," she said. "It's another example of the community helping us."
