Snow pushes south of Havre over weekend

A storm predicted to drop some snow in north-central Montana over the weekend, generally pushed south in the state, but more white stuff could be hitting next week, a National Weather Service meteorologist said this morning.

A weekend weather system originally expected early last week to drop up to 4 inches in the plains and as much as 8 inches in the mountains had been downgraded by the weekend, and ended up with a minuscule drop in Havre Saturday morning.

Great Falls meteorologist James Oh said this morning that Havre received about. 2 inches of snow over the weekend, with the winter weather centering more from Great Falls south and east.

Great Falls received about 1.3 inches, while Helena received about 2.5 inches and Dillon got the highest snowfall, with about 4 inches dropping there.

Oh said the system stretched east, including Lewistown receiving snow over the weekend, although the Weather Service had not yet confirmed the amount of snowfall there.

Glasgow reports more than 3 inches of snow for the month, with more than 2 inches dropping Saturday and more than 1 inch more Sunday.

Billings recorded a record 4 inches of snowfall Friday, although no more white stuff is reported to have fallen there since.

Some snow also fell west of the Continental Divide, with Kalispell reporting a trace over the weekend and about a fifth of an inch reported falling in Missoula Friday, bringing its total for the month to. 4 inches.

Temperatures were chilly over the weekend, with Havre reporting a high of 43 degrees and a low of 12 Friday and a high of 43 and low of 20 Saturday.

While this week is expected to be comparatively balmy — with dry conditions and temperatures up into the 50s by Thursday and Friday — and dry this week it could take a turn toward the winter next week.

The Weather Service forecast for Havre Sunday includes a high near 36 and partly cloudy skies with a chance of rain showers and snow showers above 3,000 feet — Havre is listed at 2,589 feet — and colder and snowy weather next week as another front moves through.

"Another system … is going to bring snow showers by next week, " Oh said. "We're going to be colder, for sure. "
