City awarded for safety record

Havre City Council Member Bob Kaul urged everyone at Monday's council meeting to congratulate city employees for earning two safety awards from the state insurance authority.

"They have done an outstanding job of going out there doing their job, day-in and day-out, they do it very safely, they do it very efficiently …, " Kaul said. "I believe that any time you see any of our city employees out there working, tell them congratulations, because they're the ones that did it. "

The city was presented awards for safety by the Montana Municipal Insurance Authority during a training program Friday.

Kaul said the awards are displayed in City Hall, but the people who deserve the congratulations are the workers.

"They're the people that come to us if they think they need something or if they think there's a better way to do something, they bring it forward and (we on the Safety Committee) take it from there and try to help them out, " he said. "But they're the ones that do the job safely, and they're the ones that go home every night and they're not hurting, and we don't have to go tell the families they're not coming home. That, to me, is the two most important things right there. "

In other business, the council also approved authorizing city officials to purchase surplus property from the state.

City Clerk Lowell Swenson said the city periodically has to pass a resolution authorizing the purchases.

"The state requires us to renew it by resolution every three years so that we're active on the files. So I guess our three years are up, " he said.

Council member Pam Hillery asked if there is a maximum amount that the city can use for such a purchase.

Swenson and Havre Mayor Tim Solomon said nothing specific is planned for a purchase from the state Property and Public Supply Bureau, and if a purchase was made it would have to be within the limit of the budget of the department making the purchase.

"Some departments keep their eye on it for things they can use, " Solomon said.
