The Carroll College Fighting Saints are still fighting for the outright Frontier Conference championship, but they did move up in this week's NAIA Coaches Poll.
The Saints climbed to No. 2 in this week's poll after Marian of Indiana knocked off No. 1 Saint Xavier of Illinois on Saturday afternoon. Marian is the new No.1, while Saint Xavier fell to No. 5. Georgetown of Kentucky is No. 3 and MidAmerican Nazarene is No. 4. Eastern Oregon remained at No. 21. Eastern Oregon crushed UM-Western Saturday in Dillon, but failed to climb in the polls. EOU is fighting to earn an NAIA playoff berth, though no Frontier Conference team has ever made the field with three losses.
Meanwhile, a pair of EOU players earned Frontier Conference honors this week.
EOU's Kevin Sampson, a 5-foot-8, 180-pound junior running back from Seattle was named offensive player of the week. In Eastern's 54-13 victory over Montana Western, Sampson rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown on just nine carries. On his first carry, he broke the school career rushing record. Other players nominated were Kyle Johnston of Montana State-Northern and Matt Ritter of Carroll College.
EOU's Nick Magrone, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound sophomore defensive back, from Portland, Ore earned defensive honors. Against Montana Western, Magrone had three solo tackles, two assisted tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception returned for a touchdown. Also nominated, Ted Morigeau of Carroll College and Jared Rohrback of Montana State-Northern.
Carroll kicker Tom Yaremko earned special teams honors for the week.
Northern and Carroll square of this Saturday in a regular season finale in Havre. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. The Saints need to beat the Lights or havre Eastern Oregon lose at Rocky Mountain College to clinch the Frontier title outright and earn the league's automatic bid. A Northern win over Carroll and an an EOU win at Rocky would give the Mounties a share of the Frontier title with the Saints.
