Breaking Sports: Lights topple Orediggers in Butte

The MSU-Northern football team is in first place in the Frontier Conference for the first time in six seasons thanks to a gutsy 23-12 win at Montana Tech Saturday night in Butte. The Lights are also off to their first 2-0 start in four years after their road win. Northern took a 9-6 halftime lead on a Juan Garcia field goal, the overtook the Orediggers for good on an interception return for a score by sophomore Tanner Varner. Both the Lights and Orediggers added scores late in the fourth quarter as MSU-N beat Tech in Butte for the fifth time in the last six season.

The Lights are 2-0 in conference play and tied atop the league standings with Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers snapped Carroll College's 43-game winning streak Saturday in Helena and will travel to Havre next Saturday to face the Lights on their homecoming day.
