Breaking Sports: North Stars split in Day One of Memorial Tournament

The Havre North Stars started the 2011 North Star Memorial Tournament by winning in dramatic fashion. Late into the night however, things didn't go as well. The North Stars beat Glasgow in extra innings in the tournament opener Friday afternoon at Legion Field, but in the finale of day one on Friday night, the Gallatin Valley Outlaws proved to match for Havre to handle. Havre beat Glasgow 4-3 in eight innings to open tournament play, but the Outlaws blanked the North Stars 4-0 in the nightcap, as Havre garnered just one hit in the game. The North Stars picked up just five hits against the Reds earlier in the day, but superb pitching by Brandon Smith and some extra-inning heroics at the plate, including the game-winning run scored by Colt Young was good enough to give Havre a split on the opening day of the three-day tournament.

There are six more games on tap Saturday, including a Havre doubleheader. The North Stars (6-4) face the Vauxhall Spurs at 6 p.m. and the Glendive Blue Devils at 8:15. The tournament concludes with three games on Sunday.
