HHS girls falter against Central A foes

It was a rough two games for the Central A Blue Pony girls this weekend.

Playing two very tough conference opponents, the Ponies were looking forward to using the weekend as a measuring stick. But being blown out in back-to-back games, the Ponies now know they have some work to do before the postseason.

On Friday the Ponies were on the road where the Lewistown Golden Eagles defeated HHS 53-36. And on Saturday the Ponies hosted Butte Central, but the Maroons handed the Ponies a 64-38 loss at the Havre High gymnasium.

Saturday at home, the Ponies ran into a very tough and experienced Maroons squad.

While HHS was able to really hang with Butte Central for the first eight minutes of play, the Maroons began to further themselves as the game went on. It wasn't long before the Ponies' 11-7 first quarter lead was overcome by the Maroons.

In the last 5:30 of the first quarter Butte Central outscored the Ponies 17-4 to take a 24-15 lead at the first break. And the Maroons added 16 more points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 40-26 at intermission. HHS was then outscored 24-12 in the second half.

The Ponies had their good times and bad on Saturday, but the Maroons' size and experience proved too much for the young Ponies. Lexie Murphy and Quinn Peoples did the most damage as Murphy led the way with 18 points and Peoples followed close behind with 16.

Kassala Holdsclaw led the way for the Ponies' offense. She did a good job penetrating to the basket as well as getting to the free-throw-line. Holdsclaw finished with 10 points and hit 8-of-10 free throws.

Peyton Filius added nine points for the Ponies, while Christina Mack and Paighton Gilman finished with six a piece.

HHS didn't have the best of luck on Friday, losing to Lewistown 53-36.

The Eagles jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Ponies 15-4 in the first eight minutes. And though the Ponies posted 14 in the second quarter, the Eagles' 13 kept the lead at 26-18 at intermission. But in the second half the Eagles kept the Ponies at bay, outscoring them 25-18.

Jaclyn Evans led the Ponies' offense with 19 points, but was the only Pony in double digit scoring. Peyton Filius added seven and Mack added six.

The Ponies now sit at 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference, and will host Browning on Thursday night and then face Conrad on the road on Saturday
