The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team began a four-day road trip to Wyoming with a successful dual win on Wednesday night.
In Powell, Wyo., the Lights took care of NJCAA powerhouse Northwest College 34-9 in dual action. MSU-N has another dual set for tonight at Western Wyoming.
Against the Trappers, the Lights started with a forfeit win at 174 pounds, then got pins from Kody Reed (2:58) at 184 pounds and Evan Hinebauch (3:27) at 197 pounds. The Lights kept rolling with Nick King earning a 3-0 decision at heavyweight and Riley Miller earning a close, 3-2 decision at 125 pounds.
Northern had to forfeit at 133 pounds and Anthony Weerheim was upset 7-6 at 149 pounds, but Hunter Azure earned a 9-3 decision at 141, Mickey Cheff grabbed a 12-2 major decision at 157 and Ethan Hinebauch edged out a 3-2 decision at 165 to give the Lights a commanding victory.
"We didn't lose many matches," MSU-N head coach Tyson Thivierge said. "And for the second road trip of the year, I thought we performed really well. We won some close matches and we dominated some matches, so all in all, it was a good dual for us."
After tonight's dual in Rock Springs, Wyo., the Lights will head to Laramie for the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open on Saturday.
