Havre wins five duals in the Mining City

The Mining City Duals bring in some of the best prep wrestlers in the state, year in and year out. The Havre High wrestling program made the trip again this year, and while the season is just getting underway, the young Blue Ponies really liked what they were able to accomplish this weekend.

The Central A Blue Ponies got six duals this weekend in Butte. And winning five of six, HHS got a lot of good production out of their young and veteran grapplers. Friday the Ponies defeated Helena Capital 72-15 in round one, Kalispell Flathead 54-33 in round three and Sidney 50-30 in round seven. On Saturday the Ponies suffered their only loss when Billings Senior took down HHS 39-33 in round nine. But the Ponies got back on track when they defeated defending Class AA state champion Bozeman 54-31 in round 10 and defeated Helena 48-38 in round 13.

"This was a lot of good experience for the team," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "I have a bunch of young kids in the lineup and they just competed really hard. And my older kids were extremely dominant, and they are just doing a great job."

Seniors and veteran wrestlers Casey Schaub, Eli Hinebauch and Dillon Seely led the way for the Ponies this weekend. They all went 6-0 and dominated the competition all weekend long.

Schaub (189) earned wins by fall in five duals, his fastest coming against Capital when he pinned Allan Schmitz in 44 seconds. His sixth win was by forfeit. Hinebauch (152) earned pins in all six of his matches, his fastest fall coming agasint Flathead when he pinned Brock Stellar in just 47 seconds. And Seely (140) followed suit, also grabbing six pins and his fastest coming against Helena when he pinned Jacob VanDyke in 1:09.

Kameron Pribyl (160) also had a great weekend as a Blue Pony veteran. He lost just one match in the dual against Billings Senior, when defending Class AA state champion Ben Sulser beat him 2-1.

"I am pleased with the way our kids competed when they were winning and losing," Filius said. "Top to bottom. A lot of times you go down there and that tougher competition will expose your character and you don't like what you see. But this time I was pleased, the kids even in losses competed really hard."

Some of the Ponies' younger talent also stepped up this weekend against some of the tougher competition they will see all season.

Freshman Grayson Brenna (98) went 4-2 on the weekend, including three wins by way of fall. But where he impressed the most was against Harrison Howe of Billings Senior, when Brenna lost 8-7. The match could have gone either way, and Brenna fought all three periods. And Tyler Adams also performed. He was 5-1 and lost his only match when bumped up to 285 pounds against Helena. Tucker Erickson is a State AA chamion and Adams jumped at the opportunity to move up and face him. Adams was pinned in 3:46, but pinned three opponents himself over the weekend.

Dylan Stewart (105) also went 3-3, while Nate Kennelley (112) went 3-3, Dustin Seely (119) went 1-5, Thomas Gruber (125) went 4-2, Gunnar Aageson (130) went 1-5, Matt Emge (135) went 3-3, Jordan Schroeder (145) went 3-3 and Dustin Odegard (215/285) went 1-6.

Overall the Ponies wrestled well this weekend. They saw production from all over the lineup, and even show a lot of great potential from their loss to Billings Senior.

"They (Broncs) are very similar to us and we matched up well." Filius said. "We had a couple of matches that we lost that were one point matches and could have gone the other way. But our kids who are losing those one point matches are freshman and sophomore, and their kids that are winning those are sophomores through seniors. But that's just the way it goes."

And in wins and losses, the Ponies wrestled very aggressive. They didn't sit back on their heels, but rather set the tempo of each match. And going into this weekend Filius said he would know a lot more about his team and whether they have a shot late in the season of making a run at state or not. And while state is still a long ways away and the Ponies have a lot of wrestling still to do, this weekend was a huge step forward.

"The other coaches and myself were very pleased with what we saw," Filius said. "I think we have what it takes to show up in February and see if we can scare some teams."

This weekend the Ponies take on another tough tournament, when they spend Friday and Saturday in Great Falls for the CMR Holliday Classic where they have finished first or second the last five years.
