Hi-Line boys basketball roundup

It was just the first week back after a long winter break, but basketball was in full swing on the Hi-Line.

The 9C North Star Knights got back to action on Friday when they took on and defeated the 10C Sunburst Refiners 49-43 at in Rudyard.

In the first half the Knights built a 26-12 lead, but had to fend off a surging Refiners squad in the second half. The Knights were outscored 31-23 in the second half, but their nine fourth quarter points were just enough to gain the six-point win.

Jordy Donoven's 18 points led the Knights' offense, as did Karston Donoven's 11. Connor Kline also pitched in eight, while Dylan Crittenden added four.

North Star will take on Hays-Lodge Pole tonight and will travel to Highwood on Friday.

The Turner Tornadoes and Box Elder Bears also faced off in 9C action on Friday.

And in a close contest, it was the Tornadoes coming away with the 63-55 league win.

After the first quarter the Tornadoes held a slight lead at 16-15. And in the second quarter the Bears remained in contention by managing a 26-26 tie at intermission. But the tie didn't last long, as the Tornadoes turned in an 18-11 third quarter and 19-18 fourth to ensure the win.

Jacob Burns racked up 12 points for the Bears and Jessie Ramos and Dakota Standing Rock followed with nine each.

But despite the efforts of the Bears, Travis Daniels led all scorers with 29, leading the Tornadoes to victory. Gavin Maloney also added 13, while Dusty Mohar added eight.

Another 9C matchup between the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Big Sandy Pioneers also took place on Friday.

And in another very close matchup, it was the Beeters who prevailed 60-59 in Big Sandy.

The Beeters took the early lead, 19-13 after the first eight minutes of play, but had to fend off the Pioneers as they outscored the Beeters 15-12 in the second quarter. The lead was shaved to 31-28, but the Beeters did just enough to ensure the win after being outscored 31-28 by the Pioneers in the second half.

Jessey Bailey led the Pioneers attempts with 17 points, while CJ Hanson and Trevor Lackner followed close behind, each with 16 of their own.

But Lane Schmitt's 17, Chris Haider's 12, Taylor Erskine's 10, Tyler Molyneaux's nine and Grant Tilleman's seven were enough to lead the Beeters to victory.

The 10 C Chester/J-I Hawks also got back to their season on Friday.

But facing a tough Power squad, the Hawks fell 50-41to the Power Pirates in Power.

The Hawks got off to a very slow start on Friday, but did show signs of life. After trailing 7-4 after the first quarter, the Hawks bounced back to take a 21-17 lead at the half. But as the Pirates offense began to heat up, the Hawks couldn't keep up. The Pirates put up 17 third quarter points and 15 fourth quarter points while the Hawks were held to 20 total second half points.

Lane Harmon led the Hawks with 12 points, and Brandon Graff totaled eight. Grant Lakey and Ryne Tyler also added seven apiece, but Power's Gus Somerfeld's 20 points and the rest of the Power offense proved to be too much to handle.

Some local Class B squads also saw Friday night action.

The 2B Harlem Wildcats are in an attempt to rebuild their program, but suffered another tough loss. Hosting the Malta Mustangs, the Wildcats were defeated 73-34.

Malta jumped all over the Wildcats early, and never let up, putting up 22 points in the first quarter, 25 in the second, 14 in the third and 12 in the fourth. The Wildcats totaled just nine first half points and managed 25 in the second half.

Devone LaSarte led the Wildcats with 16 points, and Jimmy Werk added six. Travis First Raised had three points as well.

The 1B Rocky Boy Stars are off to another solid season, and earned two more wins this weekend, defeating the Shelby Coyotes 57-49 on Friday and defeating the Fairfield Eagles 55-40 on Saturday.

Facing the Coyotes, the Stars grabbed the 15-10 lead early and built on it in the second quarter, outscoring the Coyotes 13-10 in the second frame. The Coyotes would however hang around in the second half as both teams posted 29 points each, but the Stars lead was just enough to lock down the win.

Kirby LaFromboise had a solid game for Rocky Boy with 18 points. Leisin Oats had 16, and Skylar LaForge had 11.

On Saturday, the Stars grabbed their second win of the weekend.

But this time around, the Stars trailed 10-8 after the first quarter and needed a 15-12 second quarter to capture the 23-22 lead at the half. Rocky Boy then outscored the Eagles 32-18 in the second half to take the 15-point victory.

Oats had another big game for the Stars, leading the scoring with 20 points. LaForge also played well again with 16, while Kirby LaFromboise returned to double figures with 10.

Next up for the Stars is Conrad on Friday and Choteau on Saturday.

The Wildcats also played again on Saturday, but this time came away with the win. The Wildcats defeated the Glasgow Scotties 56-54 in a tight overtime matchup.

Harlem took the lead early on, but Glasgow fought back. The Wildcats held a 17-8 lead and build it to 31-20 by the halfway point. But after the Scotties put up 11 in the third and 18 in the fourth, and the Wildcats were held to six in the third and 12 in the fourth, a halftime was forced.

But coming away on top, the Wildcats outscored the Scotties 7-5 in overtime.

LaSarte led the Wildcats with 12 points while Lex Molina followed with 11 points. Branden Hammond also turned in 10, while Bud Buck finished with eight.

Harlem will face Plentywood on the road tonight, and will then travel to face Wolf Point on Friday.

The Pioneers and Tornadoes met in 9C action on Saturday as well. But winning in a big way, the Pioneers dominated, 77-31.

The Tornadoes scored just one point in the first quarter and 12 in the second, while Big Sandy put up 37 in the first half. And while Turner added 18 in the second half, the Pioneers 40 second half points put the game far out of reach.

Turner was led by Travis Daniels with 20 points, while Big Sandy was led by Devin Lackner with 22 and C.J. Hanson with 11. Colter Darlington also had 10 for the Pioneers.

Big Sandy will face Box Elder on Friday.

Wrapping up the weekends action, the Sugarbeeters and Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also faced off. And in another close, overtime matchup, it was the Beeters coming away with the 52-48 win.

The game was close all night long. The Beeters held an 18-11 lead after the first quarter, but the Thunderbirds cut the lead to 27-24 at the half. In the third quarter the Thunderbirds turned the table by outscoring the Beeters 11-4, but once again things flipped when Chinook outscored HLP 11-7 in the fourth.

And in overtime, the Beeters edged the Thunderbirds after outscoring them 10-6.

Chinook was led by Schmitt who knocked down 22 points and Erskine who came up with 16. And The Thunderbirds were led by Scott Bradley with 21 and Tyler Roberts with 13.

Chinook will face Geraldine tonight and host C/J-I on Friday. Tonight HLP will face North Star.

Box Elder and Heart Butte also faced off this weekend, and C/J-I was defeated by Power 50-41.
