Hi-Line girls basketball roundup

The first full weekend of 2011 girls basketball on the Hi-Line is in the books. And coming out of the holiday break, teams were ready to play.

Friday night saw the Big Sandy Pioneers earn an important District 9C win on the road, beating the Chinook Sugarbeeters 52-48. In a close game, the Beeters played a stellar first half and led 26-21 at the half, and 37-32 at the end of three quarters. But the Pioneers ripped off a 20-10 run in the final eight minutes to take the win.

Mariah Gullickson led three Pioneers in double figures with 15 points, while Molly Herron and Mackenzie Jenkins each scored 13. In the loss, Chinook got 16 points from Taryn Norby and eight from Makhayla Farmer.

The North Star Knights also picked up a critical road win on Friday night. In Sunburst, the Knights downed the Refiners 45-42 in overtime. The Knights trailed for much of the game, but found a way to force an extra frame. Then the Knights' defense took over, holding the Refiners to just two minutes in the extra period.

Shelby Lipp scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Knights, while Jordan Spicher chipped in with 12 points.

Friday night also saw the Chester/J-I Hawks cruise to a 67-11 win over the struggling Power Pirates. The Hawks held the Pirates scoreless in the first and fourth quarters, and got 12 points from Nikole Wolfe. Jennie Ghekiere and Kylie Richter added 12 points each in the District 10C win.

In Class B action on Friday night, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars pulled off a huge District 1B win over the Shelby Coyotes in Rocky Boy. The Morning Stars used a 13-8 third-quarter run to overtake the Coyotes, and then the defense held on for a 39-34 win.

Falene Russette scored 13 points and Star Broncho added seven points in the important Rocky Boy victory.

The Harlem Wildcats weren't as fortunate however. Facing the top-ranked and unbeaten Malta M-Ettes in Malta, Harlem came up on the short end of a 67-52 decision. Harlem played well early, trailing just 31-25 at half. But the M-Ettes outscored the Wildcats 20-3 in the third period to put the game on ice.

Jevie Doney scored a team-high 13 points for the Wildcats, while Kiana Dumas added 10 points.

And things didn't get any easier for the Wildcats on Saturday night. Back at home, the Wildcats were blown out by 2B power Glasgow, 74-49. Hyapatia Getten was a bright spot for Harlem. The senior scored a team-high 17 points in the loss.

Rocky Boy was also on the receiving end of a tough loss on Saturday. In Rocky Boy, the Morning Stars were crushed by 1B power Fairfield, 59-27.

Leah Gopher scored eight points in the loss for Rocky Boy, while Tennae Singer added six points.

In other action on Saturday, the North Star Knights played in their second close game of the weekend, and this time the Knights came up just short. North Star fell 51-46 on the road to District 7C rival Roy-Winifred. The Knights trailed 28-17 at the half, but rallied to make it a game in the fourth period.

North Star got 14 points from Bridjour Han and 13 points from Shelby Lipp in the loss.

Note: Scores were not reported from Saturday's games between Box Elder and Heart Butte or Chinook and Hays-Lodge Pole.
