Republicans pave the way for budget cuts

HELENA (AP) — Republicans started scaling back state budget expectations Tuesday in order to pave the way for dramatic cuts despite objections that the move will hurt services for the elderly and disabled.

The GOP starting point is 8 percent less than what Gov. Brian Schweitzer put in his proposal.

Republicans don't like the way Schweitzer balances the budget by transferring money out of various state funds. The governor argues revenue will increase to match spending faster than currently projected thanks to an improving economy.

Specifics on GOP cuts crystalized as money for nursing home care, foster care, disability services, education and other areas were all reduced. Republican leaders say it is just a starting point, and they will be adding some money back in.
