Auditions for ‘Hollywood Dreams’ set for next week

The local amateur acting troupe is looking for actors to fill slots in the bittersweet retelling of the life of an entertainment icon.

Montana Actors' Theatre will hold auditions for "Hollywood Dreams," the story of Carol Burnett, written by her and her daughter, Carrie Hamilton, Monday and Tuesday.

The play, set to run the last two weekends in May and the first weekend in June, will be directed by Angela Pratt and Audrey Barger.

Barger said one of the reasons the auditions are set so far before the curtains will rise will be working with young actors, who will be key to the production.

The play tells the story of Burnett, growing up living on welfare just north of Hollywood Boulevard with an absent, alcoholic grandfather, a mother who drowns her sorrows in the bottle, and a pill-popping Christian Scientist grandmother.

Barger said the young actors — the troupe is looking for two girls and one boy, ages 10 or older, for the children's parts — carry the first half of the play.

The directors will be working closely with the actors selected to learn lines and the movements on stage, she said.

The other casting includes parts for four men and five women.

The auditions will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Little Theatre in Cowan Hall on the Montana State University-Northern campus Monday and Tuesday.
