It's a busy time of year for the Havre High boys and girls golf teams.
The Blue Ponies are coming off a trip to Lewistown for the Lewistown Invitational, where both Havre teams finished a solid third overall. And now HHS will head south again for 36 more holes of golf against quality Class A competition.
On Thursday morning, the Ponies will play at the Billings Central Invitational which will be held at Castle Rock Golf Course. The tournament will feature most of the Eastern A, as well as Livingston and several other area schools. JV squads from Class AA schools in Billings should also be in attendance.
And the competition will be good in Billings and it will get even tougher in Laurel on Friday. Friday morning HHS will attend the Laurel Invitational at the always-challenging Laurel Golf Club. The Laurel tournament will feature many of the same teams HHS will see on Thursday, but on a course that is considered one of the toughest in southern Montana.
And with two good courses and plenty of good competition to play against this week, Havre should be well prepared for the rest of the season.
Havre will host the Havre Invitational on Saturday at Beaver Creek Golf Course, then get ready for the Central A Divisional next week in Browning.
And preparation will be key for the Ponies, who field fairly young teams.
On the boys side, Simon McCann is a senior and HHS's No. 1 golfer, and he has been through the rigors of a golf season before. But Havre also has several players who are playing well right now that haven't seen as much action, including Spencer Morkird and Chance Pitkanen. On the girls side, the Ponies are very young with Katie Beck, Boston Swensen and Samantha French being veterans though they are all under classmen.
So for all the Blue Ponies, this week's trip to Billings and Laurel will be a great test and even better preparation for the coming postseason.
HHS will return home from Laurel just in time for the Havre Invite which starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at BCGC.
