Ponies get by Conrad

The Class B schools that appear on the Havre High boys basketball schedule always present themselves as challenge.

But on Friday in Conrad, the Central A Blue Ponies were able to handily defeat the Class B Conrad Cowboys. HHS defeated the Cowboys 49-35, and doing so improved to 8-9 on the season.

To start the game, the Ponies held only a two point lead, leading 12-10 after the first quarter. But as the game progressed the Ponies offense continued to produce, while the Cowboys struggled to keep up. HHS outscored the Cowboys 10-6 in the second quarter, 15-10 in the third and 12-9 in the fourth on route to a 14-point nonconference win.

This season the story behind the Ponies offense has been Anfernee Standing Rock and Logan Connor.

They are both averaging near 17 points per game and have carried the Ponies for much of the season. But in the win over the Cowboys, the Ponies showed a much more balanced offense, something that has surfaced off and on over the 17 games.

Connor still led the Ponies with 18 points and Standing Rock wasn't far behind with his 14. But Brandon Smith and Drew Kafka both totaled seven each while Ryan Myers added another three. Connor also led the Ponies with three 3-pointers, as he continued to dominate from behind the arc with nearly a 40 percent average.

Havre has just one more regular season game before the divisional tournament, and being a league matchup, it's an important one. Friday in Browning the No. 3 Ponies will take on the No. 1 Indians in the Ponies regular season finale.
