Lawmakers consider illegal immigration policies

HELENA — Several Republican-sponsored bills before the Legislature aim to tighten regulations for illegal immigrants in the state.

Opponents argue the measures aren't necessary in Montana. But the bills' sponsors say illegal immigration legislation is important to prevent a problem before it happens.

Rep. David Howard of Park City told the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday that Montana must make sure local governments don't mimic so-called sanctuaries in other states where police don't report illegal immigrants.

Another House committee is looking at a bill requiring employers to check an employee's immigration status through a federal database.

The Legislature is considering several other immigration bills, including another by Howard to require use of the federal database before issuing driver's licenses.

Critics say the database subjects Montanans to undue federal scrutiny.
