More limited-edition ornaments on the way

After unexpected interest depleted a supply of limited-edition pewter ornaments in three days, the local preservation commission is ordering some extras and hopes they will be in town by Dec. 21.

The Havre/Hill County Historic Preservation Commission ordered 50 engraved, limited-edition pewter replicas of the old post office and federal courthouse to be sold as a fundraiser for its activities.

When people continued to line up looking for the ornaments after they were sold out, the commission at its meeting Tuesday decided to have more made for sale, said Becki Miller, preservation officer for the commission.

Miller said the ornaments will be available only at the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce office, at 130 5th Ave., and will continue to sell for $15.

Miller said the next batch of ornaments will not be engraved and numbered, and pointed out that the people who collected the first 50 ornaments have items of much higher collectible value due to the numbering.

She said the reason for limiting the number of ornaments in the first edition ordered was due to a limited budget and to increase their value — "and we had not anticipated the huge demand by the community, " Miller added.

Miller said that next year, after the commission selects a building for the 2012 collectible ornament, it will order a larger number to meet the demand better. The issuance still will be kept relatively small to make the ornaments more collectible, she said.

The sale of the ornaments will be used to help fund the activities of the commission in its work to preserve historic buildings and areas in Havre and Hill County.
