Blue Ponies look to shine on their track

Two weeks ago the Havre High School track teams got to participate in their season debut at home, participating at the Cal Wearley track meet. And after a week break, the Blue Ponies have been practicing hard, and are now anxious to hit the track once again.

Saturday the Central A Ponies will host the annual Lions Havre Invite at the Havre Middle School track. The field events will get started at 9:30 a.m. and the track events will start at 10 a.m.

And making their way to Havre to challenge the Ponies will be Malta, Wolf Point, Chinook, North Star, Hays-Lodge Pole, Rocky Boy, Box Elder and Harlem.

"There is going to be a lot of good talent," Havre High head coach Trever VanCampen said. "Gauging off of the scores and times that I have read off the Internet, some of these athletes on these teams are putting up some really good marks. It doesn't matter what class they are from, there is some good competition and our kids are excited and looking forward to the competition."

It's only the second meet for the Ponies, and they are coming off of a long break. But with the weeklong break, came a lot of time to prepare. Most of the teams competing on Saturday, the Ponies faced at the Cal Wearley, and now that the Ponies have their times and marks against real competition, they are extremely happy to get back to action.

"We got our times and marks from our first meet (Cal Wearley) and the kids were able to see where they stand," VanCampen said. "And we've been plugging away at conditioning and strengthening our team as a whole. We are still trying new things and putting kids in new events, but we are all excited to get back out on the track again and see how we have improved."

For the Ponies to compete this weekend they have to get a wide variety of production. The usual point-getters stepped up in a big way a week ago, but the Ponies have to get more production from some other talent.

In their first outing, the girls got solid points from Peyton Filius, Katie Christianson, Jaye Ceynar, Ashlynn Van Voast and Brittanee Korb.

And on the boys side, the Ponies got good production from Kendall Murrie, Mason Case, Ty Bauer, Garrett Aguillard, Marc Klimas and Corderro Strickland.

But now more than ever, with Strickland missing an uncertain amount of time with an injury, the Ponies need more athletes to perform at a high level if they hope to compete.

"We have a solid core of athletes," VanCampen said. "And we think that if that core can produce and we get a few more kids to step up we will keep improving. We are looking to compete at every meet and we are looking for our point totals to keep improving. The kids are going to have to compete hard individually, that will help the team stay on track to hopefully peak at divisionals.

The Ponies will compete on Saturday at the Lions Havre High Invite. The field events will start at 9:30 a.m. and the track events will start at 10 a.m.
