Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

It's tournament time. That's what the last week of the regular season in Hi-Line girls basketball was all about, and teams from all over the area got one last chance to get ready for the postseason.

The action started on Thursday as North Star beat Hays-Lodge Pole in a 9C makeup game. The T-Birds outscored the Knights in the first half, but North Star used 20-point third quarter to take the lead for good in the 60-54 win.

Shelby Lipp led four Knights in double figures with 19 points. Bridjour Han added 13 points, Jordan Spicher had 12 and Kali Twedt scored 10 for the Knights. Shayla White Cow scored 18 points and Kristie Runs Above added 17 in the loss for HLP.

Thursday night also saw Rocky Boy fall at 1B power Conrad 48-28. The Morning Stars trailed 26-13 at intermission and never got into the game. Chanel Standing Rock paced the Morning Stars in the loss with nine points.

On Friday night, HLP bounced back from its loss to the Knights with a stunning 59-49 win over Big sandy in Hays. The Pioneers led by one point at halftime, but the T-Birds outscored them 21-11 in the final eight minutes for the win.

Anita Denny poured in a game-high 26 points for the T-Birds in the win. Molly Herron scored 16 points and Mackenzie Jenkins added 13 in the loss for Big Sandy.

HLP went 6-12 overall during the regular season and finished fifth in the 9C standings.

Friday also saw several nonconference games involving 9C teams.

Box Elder had a tough time with Sunburst, but the Bears got away with a 48-39 win over the Refiners in Sunburst. The Bears held a 25-14 lead at intermission, but the Refiners kept things close right to the end.

Aricka Wolf Chief and Brandi Buffalo each scored 10 points for the first-place Bears in their win over their 10C rival.

Chinook and North Star weren't as fortunate on Friday night.

The Sugarbeeters lost at home to Geraldine 42-31. In a tight first half, the Beeters trailed by four points, but a 19-13 Geraldine fourth quarter sealed the Beeters' fate. Makayla Farmer paced the Beeters in the loss with 13 points.

North Star on the other hand, suffered a heartbreaker Friday night in Rudyard as 8C power Highwood edged the Knights in the finals seconds, 42-41. The Knights led into the fourth quarter, but the Mountaineers went on a 15-8 run, including the game-winner to upset the Knights.

Shelby Lipp led the Knights with 13 points and Kali Twedt scored nine in the tough loss. The Knights finished the season with a 6-11 overall record and in fourth in the 9C standings.

In 10C action Friday, Chester/J-I locked up the regular season title by ripping Heart Butte, 67-13 in Chester. Stine Haaland and Jocelyn woods each scored 11 points to lead the Hawks, and 12 C/J-I players got into the scoring column against the Warriors.

In 2B action, Harlem started its last weekend of the regular season by beating rival wolf Point 46-43 on senior night in Harlem. The Wildcats trailed by one point entering the fourth period, but held the Wolves to just two baskets in the final eight minutes.

Maurvella Fuller poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the wildcats, while Hyapatia Getten added six points.

Saturday saw a different outcome for the Wildcats though.

In Plentywood, the Wildcats lost 67-54 in their last 2B game of the year. Harlem led going into the final stanza, but the Plentywood Wildcats scored 23 points in the final eight minutes to get the win.

Getten led Harlem with 15 points, while Jacinda Fuller and Kianna Dumas each scored 12 in the tough loss. Harlem finished the season with a 9-9 overall record and in fourth place in the final 2B standings.

Saturday night was also a tough season finale for Rocky Boy as the Morning Stars were beaten by Choteau 52-33. The game was fairly close throughout, but the Bulldogs outscored the Morning Stars 18-6 in the final stanza to pull away for good.

Tennae Singer led the Morning Stars with 10 points as Rocky Boy finished the season with a 9-9 overall record and in fourth place in the rigorous 1B.

In one last regular season 9C battle, it was Box Elder putting a stamp on a great regular season as the Bears demolished Big Sandy 71-54 on the Pioneers' home floor. Box Elder raced out to a 36-18 halftime lead, and while the Pioneers played better in the second half, they couldn't overcome the big deficit.

Megan Parker scored 19 points to lead the Bears, while Crystal Stamper added 16 and Rebecca Rossette chipped in with 11. The Pioneers got 14 points from Leela Engel and 10 from Shanya Gilead in the loss.

The Bears finished the season 17-1 and won the 9C by two games. The Pioneers finished second in the 9C and had a 12-6 overall record.

In a nonconference game between area rival Saturday night, it was the Chester/J-I Hawks squeaking one out against Chinook 49-44 in Chester. Jenni Ghekiere scored 17 points to lead the Hawks to the win, while Taryn Norby scored a game-high 21 points for the Beeters.

Chinook finished the regular season in third place in the 9C with a 10-8 overall record. C/J-I went 14-4 overall and won the 10C outright.

Now area teams will prepare for their respective district tournaments. The 9C tourney starts Thursday in Havre, while the 10C tourney gets underway Wednesday in Conrad. The 1B tournament starts Wednesday in Cut Bank and the 2B tourney starts Thursday in Malta.
