Businesses that won't accept Canadian money don't deserve Canadian business

Editor:

I am a frequent visitor to Havre for family and pleasure purposes. We shop here and come to Havre often. I live in Canada and have been there 35 years, and in that 35 years we have been to Havre many many times.

But in the last few months we have been getting negative feed back on the exchange of our money. We have been in a number of places that will not take Canadian money. Why not? It spends like the American dollar. Many of you should know the Canadian dollar is worth more than the American dollar right now. In the past you never had any problem taking our money when the exchange rate was high you would gladly take our money. When asked about this people's answers were that the banks won't take it.

That is a lame answer because banks have to change it, exchanging money is part of their business. They deal in money. I also know that they may charge a fee for that but at this point in time I think it would be to your advantage to take our money. The Canadians have been supporting Havre all along. We have given this town many dollars of business over the years. It makes for bad business practices to turn business away. As business owners can you afford to do this?

We have stayed at a particular motel through the years because of their friendly service, now they aren't taking Canadian money? Well, let me point out the fact that most times I have been down there the parking lot of this motel is full of Canadian business. But that could change in a hurry for the fact that you won't take our money.

So this brings me to the question: Are you doing so good that you can turn people off in this matter or are you just too lazy to take the money to the bank and go through the process of getting it converted? As a border town, I think this would be an important thing to look into. Telling people they won't take their cash makes me think I will go on down the road where I know that Canadian money isn't recognized as a common practice and use my plastic.

But on the other hand, I do have to applaud the other businesses in Havre that have gone out of their way to take the Canadian dollar at par and welcome our business with open arms. I will continue to shop in your stores and give you my business. Also, I will pass this on to my friends who come to Havre for their pleasure, and let them know where their dollar can be well received and taken at par and the businesses that won't.

Thank you for your time, and I hope that these businesses will look into their money handling practices.
