Havre Public School students showed their appreciation of the students of yesteryear Sunday at the 21st Annual Salute to Senior Citizens.

"It's just a way to say thanks, " Superintendent Andy Carlson said. "I enjoy hearing the stories from when they went here.

"Another nice thing about today is that it's also a way to showcase some of the talent of our kids. "

And the talent, in many forms, was on show.

On entering the school, after being greeted by HPS trustees Curtis Smeby and Norm Proctor, attendees got an eyeful of the talent of the students.

Across the school's entryway were boards and tables filled, in three sections, with art from students in the districts elementary, middle and high schools.

From there, the salute carried on in the HMS cafeteria, where students from the district's National Junior Honor Society and Junior Helpers and the superintendent served brunch and beverages to the senior honorees.

The afternoon was kicked off by Havre High School speech and debate team. Members Juletta Don and Jordyn Eastlick handled master of ceremony duties, introducing some of HPS' musically-minded students, including vocal solos from Nelly Monguh and Anna Kaercher, piano solos from Vander Swensen and Kristawna Fox, who also played a flute piece, and the Havre High clarinet group playing an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite.

The event concluded with the superintendent thanking everyone for their vital support of the district.

"You cannot have a good school district without a strong community, " Carlson said. "You are such a big piece of that."
