HHS grapplers gain experience at Holiday Classic

For the second straight weekend, the Havre High wrestling team took on some of the state's top talent. And as this year's young team continues to grow, the Central A Blue Ponies were able to find more success.

Friday and Saturday the Ponies were in Great Falls for the annual CMR Holiday Classic wrestling tournament. And after finishing as the No. 4 team a year ago, the Ponies came in and finished as the No. 7 team this season, earning 132 points. Great Falls High took the No. 1 spot for the second straight season, finishing with 219.5 points. Billings Skyview was second with 177.5 and Glacier was third with 171 points.

It is always good for the Ponies making the trip to the annual tournament, but the results weren't all positive for HHS this time around. They faced some top talent and got better for it, but the HHS grapplers are still waiting for some individuals to step up.

"If we are going to get better," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "We have to face the best talent. This is as good as tournament that we will see in the state of Montana, so we needed to see this. In order to get better you have to find the areas that need work and we found some of those areas.

"We took some steps forward in some areas," Filius said. "But we also took some steps back in other areas. We have to buckle up and get a little tougher I guess. But it's probably a little bit of both (youth and still early in the season), but at the same time, you can wait around for guys to buck up and get tough, or they can do it now. I guess I would assume to have them do it right now."

Grayson Brenna (98) and Dylan Stewart (105) continued to improve as two Blue Pony freshman. They have been thrown into the state's best wrestling pool the last two weekends, and have shown a lot of promise. This weekend was the same, as both Brenna and Stewart found ways to compete against some very tough opponents.

On Friday, in the second round, Brenna earned a win by fall in just 20 seconds. And in the quarterfinals Brenna earned an 8-6 decision over Clay Stillwagon of Butte Central. In Saturday's semifinals, Jarren Komac of Great Falls, 13-2, defeated Brenna. And in the third/fourth place round, Colt McDaniel of Forsyth defeated Brenna 5-2.

Stewart grabbed a win by fall (:57) over Caleb Shigley of Great Falls in the second round on Friday, but fell in the quarterfinals. Stewart lost to Billings Senior's Tayte Wagner 7-2. Stewart ran into another tough match in the fourth round on Saturday, falling to Jace Holman of Billings Skyview in 1:40.

"Those two have done a very nice job in the lower weights," Filius said. "And they did that again this weekend."

And the veteran wrestlers, they were led once again by Eli Hinebauch at 152 pounds.

Hinebauch won by fall (:56) in the first round, second round (3:40), and quarterfinals (2:42). Hinebauch also earned a 7-6 decision over Dallen Brauer (Forsyth) in the semifinals, and a 3-2 decision over Sam Shelton (Billings Skyview) in the finals. Brauer is one of the top 152 pounders in the state, a big win for Hinebauch in the semis.

"That was fun to watch," Filius said. "He had some close matches, but he just sticks with it and gets after it."

Also for the Ponies, Casey Schaub (189) wound up finishing third, while Dillon Seely finished fifth and Kameron Pribyl (160) finished sixth as well.

Dustin Seely (119) went 2-2, Thomas Gruber (125) went 2-2, Gunnar Aageson (130) went 1-2, Dillon Seely (135) went 4-1, Kyle Gooch (140) went 0-2, Jordan Schroeder (145) went 0-2, Grant Pattison (160) went 0-2, Casey Schaub (171) went 4-1, Dustin Odegard (215) went 1-2 and Kolton Lodge (285) went 1-2.

Schaub had another great outing, but was disappointed in his third-place finish. He cruised into the semifinals, but when he got there, he was defeated by Daryl Fulton of Forsyth, 7-4. After the loss he battled back with a 2-1 decision over Jake Leinwand of Billings West in the third-fourth place match.

Overall, the Ponies found a lot more areas to work on. They found some success, but like coach Filius said, they also suffered some set backs in areas. The Ponies will look to do some patchwork in time for their short turnaround dual with Lewistown on Tuesday at the Havre High gymnasium at 6 p.m.
