Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

January is going by fast, and that means things are getting very serious when it comes to high school girls basketball on the Hi-Line. This week marks the halfway point in the 2010-11 season, and as teams turn for the home stretch, every game is magnified.

On Friday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters grabbed an important road win over the District 8C Geraldine Tigers. The Beeters edged the Tigers 38-34 via a 15-8 third-quarter run. Makayla Farmer led a balanced Chinook attack with eight points, while Taryn Norby and Haley Swank each scored seven.

Friday night also saw North Star fall 10 points short to 8C power Highwood, 43-33. The Knights got 18 points and 14 rebounds from Shelby Lipp in the loss, while Bridjour Han added nine points.

Things went much better for Chester/J-I on Friday. The Hawks crushed Heart Butte 72-22 in a District 10C game. C/J-I got 12 players into the score book, and Jenni Ghekiere led the way with 13 points while Kate Graff chipped in with 12.

In Class B action on Friday night, both Rocky Boy and Harlem found the going tough in district play.

In Rocky Boy, the Morning Stars were defeated by the Conrad Cowgirls 60-50 in 1B play. The Morning Stars fell victim to a 26-point third-quarter explosion by the Cowgirls, and had to play catch-up the rest of the way.

Harlem also lost a tough district game, falling 54-41 to the unbeaten Wolf Point Wolves. The Wildcats led 25-24 at halftime, but the Wolves took the lead and ran away with it in the third quarter. Hyapatia Getten scored 13 points for the Wildcats, while Jevie Doney added eight.

Things went better for Big Sandy and Box Elder on Friday night, one night before their huge 9C showdown.

Box Elder stayed unbeaten on Friday with a 63-45 drubbing of Sunburst at home. Aricka Wolf Chief scored a game-high 24 points and Megan Parker chipped in with 12 points in the easy nonconference win.

Box Elder's win set up a huge district showdown with the one-loss Pioneers on Saturday night in Big Sandy. Both teams were unbeaten in league play, and the game lived up to the hype with the Pioneers taking a 63-61 win. The big surge came in the third quarter when Big Sandy exploded for 26 points. But the Bears fought back via a 16-11 run in the fourth, only to come up just short at the end of the game.
