City supports regional port upgrades, mostly Wild Horse

After some establishing of priorities, the Havre City Council voiced its support for upgrades at the ports of entry at Wild Horse and Turner.

At Tuesday's meeting, the council took a second look at, and approved, a resolution to express support for port changes, including changing hours of operation.

When Resolution 3580 first came up on the agenda in early December, Councilman Bob Kaul asked that the council wait until they were able to talk to representatives of U. S. Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester about the possible consequences of passing the resolution.

Kaul, in December and Tuesday night, was concerned that supporting Wild Horse and Turner may delay progress on the Port of Wild Horse.

"We need to keep Wild Horse at the front and center, " Kaul said, adding that regional communities need to help get Wild Horse upgraded, then Havre will help with theirs, going one project at a time.

Councilman Gerry Veis asked Paul Tuss of Bear Paw Development Corp. which port he would choose to upgrade, if he could only pick one.

"Wild Horse. Always, " Tuss said.

He added that when asking the offices of Baucus and Tester if the resolution could affect Wild Horse's progress "They said no. They appreciated our asking. And they certainly understood that Wild Horse was our priority. "

Kaul had suggested some changes in wording in the resolution, to make the priority more clear, but they were not included in the final resolution.

The resolution, unchanged from Dec. 7, passed unanimously.
