Bert Wayne Nelson

Bert Wayne Nelson, 87, died Monday morning at St. Peter's Hospital in Helena, Mont., of natural causes.

Cremation will take place, and his memorial service will be 11 a. m. Monday, April 25, 2011, at the Messiah Lutheran Church, with Pastor Val Metropolis officiating. A fellowship luncheon will be held immediately after the service. Burial with full military honors will be held at a later time. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.

Bert was born March 9, 1924, on a homestead near Malta, Mont. He attended schools in Malta and graduated from high school there. Bert enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 6, 1943, and served in Okinawa and in occupation duty in China. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1946, as a corporal. He married Betty Joan Woodring on Aug. 25, 1952. Bert went to work for the Great Northern Railroad in 1946 as a brakeman. He worked for Amtrak in 1980 and retired in 1987. He worked for 46 years for the railroad before he retired. Bert was a proud Marine and loved all animals. He was a kind and gentle soul.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty, in 1992; and a brother and sister-in-law, Curt and Hilda Nelson; a brother, Jim Nelson; and his dog, Tooti.

Bert is survived by his children, Wade (Janet) Nelson, Barbara (Bill) Wiebe, Tim Nelson, and Bruce (Tammy) Nelson, all of Havre, Mont. ; one sister, Leona Robertson of Malta; and a niece, Sylvia (Don) Nevins of California; two grandsons; Justin (Kris) Wiebe and Kelly (Iza) Wiebe; three granddaughters; Brenda (Kevin) Anderson, Karen Nelson, and Shari Nelson;, great grandsons, Zach Wiebe and Alex Graves; and one great granddaughter, Rylie Wiebe.
