Lights grapple Trappers
For the final time this season, wrestling fans will get one more look at the Montana State University-Northern Lights.
Tonight at 7, the Lights take on Northwest College in dual action at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse.
And not only is the dual a big one for the ninth-ranked NAIA Lights, who have been gaining momentum the last few weeks, it will also be an emotional one for Northern senior 157-pounder Tay Todd, who will be honored before the match.
Todd is currently in his third and final season with the Lights. He is a three year starter, this season through his determination and work ethic has again made him a success for the team. At the first tournament of the year, Todd qualified for his first national tournament, and will be one of 10 wrestlers competing for All-American status. Todd is considered an old soul and hard nosed and determined competitor on and off the mat. He received his Associates Degree in Radiology from Montana Tech, and is currently working on his Bachelors Degree in Biology at MSU-Northern. Todd is the son of Jeff and Kim Todd.
And Todd and the Lights are hoping to make their last appearance in Havre a good one.
But the Trappers will have something to say about that. Northwest is having a solid season in the NJCAA, and they battled the Lights very tough in November in Powell, Wyo.
But the Lights have been coming on strong as of late, and tonight's dual should be a continuation of that.
Both teams are open at 125 pounds, while the Lights will go with Cameron Neiss at 133, Brandon Leliefeld at 141, second-ranked Anthony Weerheim at 149 and Todd at 157.
Jared Miller will be at 165 pounds for Northern and seventh-ranked Max Payne will go at 174. Evan Hinebauch is ranked second at 184 pounds, but could move up to wrestle at 197 tonight because the Trappers are open at 184. So it will be either Hinebauch or Kody Reed at 197 pounds.
Third-ranked heavyweight Rudy Schaffroth rounds out the MSU-N lineup.
Tonight's dual between the Lights and Trappers is set to start at 7 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse.
The Lights are back in action at the Jamestown Open on Saturday.
