Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

Highlights and lowlights of recent events on the Hi-Line:

Laurel — Havre High School Key Club members will go door to door next week to collect donations for Trick or Treat for UNICEF from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday. UNICEF raises money to end hunger among children worldwide, but is putting a special emphasis on the famine in the Horn of African, which is major crisis. HHS students should be complimented for taking time from their schedules to take part in the campaign. Havre residents can thank the students by giving them a generous contribution.

Dart — We will wait until all the facts are in to make a final determination, but we are tending to think the state of Montana has a pretty good case in its suit against petroleum giant BP. The company, the state says, was double-dipping in billing the cost of its gas station cleanups, taking money from the company's insurers and the Montana Petroleum Tank Release Compensation Board for the same work at about 10 stations with leaky tanks. BP has had a dismal record on environmental issues in recent years.

Laurel — The Heartland of America Band performed to a delighted crowd at Havre High School Thursday night. The band — and several other armed forces bands — spread the good word about the military to audiences around the country. This is the second time in recent years that a military band has performed in Havre. The military budget is about to get slashed. The only question is how much. When the budget ax falls, we hope the higher-ups spare the military bands. They perform a great public service, and they provide great entertainment.

Laurel — Every year the Havre Jaycees run a Haunted Hotel Oakland designed to scare youngsters and some oldsters. The Jaycees do a lot of good work for the community. Stop by the Haunted Hotel, take the kids with you, scare them and help out the Jaycees with a $4 donation, or a $3 donation with a nonperishable food item.

Laurel — Pepin Park is a vital part of the entertainment scene in Havre. The city's Parks and Recreation Department is undertaking a $133,000 rehabilitation project. Grants, donations and tax money will pay for the project. It will be worth the cost.
