Local youths get their day in the arena

Austin Swanson steers his horse around the first barrel of in the barrel racing for 4- to 8-year-olds Wednesday evening at the Hi-Line Junior Rodeo during the Great Northern Fair.

Once again, the Hi-Line Junior Rodeo got the Great Northern Fair started off right.

Wednesday evening in the grandstands of the fair, nearly 90 participants came together for the Junior Rodeo. And participating in events from sheep riding to barrel racing, the athletes gave fans a good show.

Drake Berreth took the No. 1 spot in the sheep riding, while Leon Todd took second. And in the boot race, it was Shad Boyce who took the No. 1 spot.

But the four-to-eight year old participants also took on the flag race, barrel race and goat ribbon untying.

In the flag race it was Madison Doney who took first with a time of 9.07, while Kristyn Kittson took second with a time of 12.12 and Kirsten Lamere took third with 13.28. And in the barrel race, Kittson moved up and took the No. 1 spot with a time of 17.47. Rebecca Stroh took second with a time of 17.59 and Kristen Lamere was third with a time of 17.81. In the goat ribbon untying Brittany Cox took first with a time of 6.75, while Stroh was second with a time of 8.22 and Kirsten Lamere was third with 8.35.

The action continued in the 9-13 age group.

Connor Bender was the only placer with 67 points in the steer riding, with nobody earning a time in the breakaway roping. In the goat tying event it was KayDee Synan who grabbed first place with a time of 15.03, while Kayla Synan was second with a time of 21.50 and Jamey Belcourt took third with a time of 26.06.

In the pole bending event it was Brietta Boyce who took first place with a time of 26.82, while KayDee Synan took second with a time of 27.08 and Stephanie Rollins took third with a time of 29.66. Kayla Synan also took first in the barrel racing with a time of 19.31, while Rollins was second with a time of 19.45 and Skylee Dirden took third with a time of 20.58.

The 14-18 year olds also got a chance to perform in front of the crowed on Wednesday night.

Clay Doney was the only participant in the calf roping and turned in a time of 27.97. And there were only three participants in the goat tying, where Tylynn Rettig took first with a time of 11.87, Paige Raty took second with a time of 12.00 and Tenley Keller took third with a time of 13.62.

Rettig, getting ready to start her freshman year of high school, traveled to participate in the rodeo from Rudyard and participated in the goat tying, barrel races and pole bending. Rettig has been competing in the Hi-Line Junior Rodeo since she was six and added another solid outing to her long list of accomplishments. Rettig is also fresh out of the National Junior High rodeo in New Mexico where she participated in the barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and ribbon roping.

"This rodeo is close to home, which a lot of mine aren't," Rettig said. "And this rodeo is just a lot of fun. There is no pressure here and I think I did pretty good. It's just a lot of fun riding in this rodeo."

In the barrel racing, Laurel White took first with a time of 17.78, while Jessie Marreel took second with a time of 17.97 and Jai-Lynne Daychild took third with a time of 18.28. And in the breakaway roping it was Marreel with a first place time of 4.81 and John Bell turning in a time of 5.72 and Raty turning in a time of 7.50 for second and third.

Tyler Doney took first in the chute dogging with a time of 4.56, with Merle Young taking second with a time of 5.34 and Kevin Young taking third with a time of 9.31. Paige Raty took first in the pole bending with a time of 22.09, while Ashley Alderdice took second with a time of 23.05 and Meagan Raty took third with a time of 23.28.

There was also team roping, but none of the five teams turned in a time.
