Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

The Chester/J-I girls basketball team is going back to the divisional tournament. The Harlem wildcats are headed there too.

It was successful weekend for two Hi-Line teams as postseason got underway this past weekend. In Conrad, the Chester/J-I Hawks successfully defended their District 10C championship and will play in the Northern C Divisional later this week.

The Hawks (16-4) beat Valier 46-34 Saturday night for the 10C championship, and they did through balance and defense. C/J-I had a slim 25-21 lead at halftime, but a 5-4 third quarter by Valier tightened things up. The Hawks responded however, and went on a 17-8 run to wrap up the district title.

C/J-I got 13 points from Stine Haaland and 10 from Jenni Ghekiere in the win.

The Hawks got to the championship game with 37-20 semifinal win over Simms on Friday night. Chester/J-I's defense again played a key role as the Hawks held the Tigers to no more than six points in any quarter.

Ghekiere led the way for the Hawks with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Haaland chipped in with 10 points. C/J-I opens Northern C play at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night in Great Falls.

Harlem's road to the Northern B was a little more difficult, but the Wildcats made it out of the District 2B tournament regardless.

The Wildcats opened 2B play Thursday in Malta with a 56-44 win over Plentywood, a team which had beaten Harlem just four days earlier. Against Plentywood, Harlem got a game-high 16 points from Maurvella Fuller, as well as 13 by Hyapatia Getten and 12 from Jacinda Fuller to adavance to Friday night's semifinals.

In the semis, Harlem ran into the top team in the district, the powerful Malta M-Ettes. And on the M-Ette's home floor, the Wildcats fell 57-32 dropping them into Saturday's consolation game.

And the moment of truth for Harlem came Saturday afternoon against rival Poplar. Harlem beat the Indians 55-50 and will play at the divisional tournament in two weeks. Harlem's third-place finish came with a second-half comeback against the Indians. Poplar led 32-23 at halftime, but the Wildcats went on a 21-7 run in the third quarter, and stormed back for the win and their best finish at the district tournament in some time.

Jacinda Fuller led the way with 19 points, while Maurvella fuller poured in 14 and Kianna Dumas chipped in with 11. Harlem (11-10) will now return to Malta this weekend for the Northern B Divisional.

The weekend wasn't as good for the Rocky Boy Morning Stars, who went 0-2 at the District 1B tournament in Cut Bank.

On Wednesday, the Morning Stars opened tournament play with a 47-38 loss to Shelby. Rocky Boy's offense never got going as the Coyotes held the Morning Stars to just 13 first-half points.

Falene Russette led the Morning Stars with 11 points and Chanel Standing Rock scored 10 as Rocky Boy dropped into loser-out play.

And in the final game of the season, Rocky Boy lost to Conrad 57-45. The Morning Stars got a huge effort from Tennae Singer, who scored 19 points, but it wasn't enough to get past the Cowgirls. Rocky Boy finished the year with an 11-9 record.
