Herberger's reopens after leak fixed

Herberger's department store reopened on Tuesday around noon.

The store was closed Monday after company officials said they wanted to "ensure the safety of the building," according to Mary Kerr, the vice president of investor and public relations for Bon-Ton, Herberger's parent company.

"The section that was impacted by the structural damage has been walled off so that our customers aren't in any kind of danger," Kerr said. "It has been signed off by the appropriate parties that it is safe for our customers and associates."

"We welcome our customers to come back in," she said.

Kyle Harland, inspector for the Montana Building Codes Bureau, stopped by Herberger's on Tuesday afternoon to take a look at the roof.

Harland said that it seemed the roof had a leak, but said he is waiting on the engineer's report on the mall's roof.

"I want to refer to his notes before I make any comment on it," Harland said.

The store was closed on Sunday afternoon, around 3 p.m., when there were concerns about what appeared to be moisture from the roof getting into the store.

All through Monday, the store was closed as the roof was cleared of snow and crews from Clausen and Sons construction company worked inside the store to fix the leak and get the store ready to accept customers again.

Satisfied with the work, the Holiday Village Mall's biggest store was reopened.

Chandra Moomey, the Holiday Village Mall property manager, was unavailable to comment on Herberger's closing, "sectioning off" and reopening.
