Malta claims Lights Team Camp title at Northern

The high school basketball season is still six months away. But for many high school players, this weekend at the Montana State University-Northern Fieldhouse was a small taste of things to come.

Friday and Saturday, Northern head men's coach Shawn Huse put on the annual Lights Team Camp, with five varsity high school teams taking to the court. Two teams from Havre High, as well as teams from Malta, Rocky Boy and North Star, got in plenty of games over the weekend.

The tournament started with pool play on Friday, and the Malta Mustangs went undefeated, earning the No. 1 seed in Saturday's single-elimination tourney. Rocky Boy finished second in pool play, followed by Havre A, North Star and Havre B.

Before the single-elimination tourney was held Saturday afternoon, there was also a situational tournament, with four different situational competitions. North Star won the "out and under" competition, Malta captured the "side-out" competition, Havre B won the "3-point" competition and Rocky Boy won the "one and one" competition.

Overall, Malta was the Team Camp champion, beating Havre A 66-48 in the championship game. Malta reached the title game by beating Havre B 90-18 in the first round. Havre A beat North Star 65-49 in the first round, then beat Rocky Boy 63-44 in the semifinals.

Individually, Malta's Kendall Denham stood out. He was the scoring champion for the weekend with a 26 points per game average, and also led the tournament in assists with 7.6 per game. Rocky Boy's Darian Lafromboise was the rebounding champion with 52 total boards and an average of 10 per game.
