It's that time again when, in between state and federal elections, democracy trickles down closer to home.
All of the cities in Hill, Blaine and Chouteau counties are wrapping up the first stage in the process of picking half of their city council representatives.
With all filings closing at 5 p. m. Thursday, many of the seats only have one candidate running unopposed so far.
Some don't even have that.
In Chinook, two of the four seats are up for their four-year terms.
The first ward will, this year, lose its occupant of the last 20 years, Freda Bryson.
Seeking to replace her is Keith Hanson, owner and publisher of the Blaine County Journal-News Opinion in Chinook and The Mountaineer in Big Sandy.
The other council seat up for election has not had anyone file for it, as of Tuesday.
It is currently held by Heath Richman, who is just finishing his first term.
Both of the council members up for election in Harlem are the sole filers for their positions.
Sondra Ashton, wrapping up her first full term as council member, is looking for another term.
And Charles Kulbeck looks to be pursuing a full term, after being appointed to the council a year-and-a-half ago to replace Bill Taylor, who gave up his seat when he was elected mayor.
Big Sandy also has two seats being sought solely by their current occupants.
Laura Lee Owen, of the first ward, and Shane Cline, of the second ward, have already filed to run again for their seats.
In Hingham, David George is the only person to have filed for the one nonpartisan council seat that will be filled this year, of two total in the town.
Anyone who wants to file for any of these positions can still do so, in their own county's clerk's office, by 5 p. m. on Thursday, June 30.
