Promotion set to encourage shopping locally

Local merchants are in the second week of a special event set to encourage people to shop locally, with local receipts earning a chance to win a big-screen television.

Bill Evans, co-owner of Bing 'N' Bob's, said he doesn't know if promotions like this keep people shopping at home, but every bit helps. Bing 'N' Bobs is participating for the second year this year.

"Anything you do to keep people at home is a good thing, because that's what helps this town survive, " Evans said. "If people don't shop in town, there won't be a town. "

The Havre Daily News is sponsoring a drawing for a 50-inch plasma high-definition TV for people who shop at the 15 participating Havre merchants.

Stacy Mantle, publisher of the Havre Daily, said many people joined in last Christmas, the first year of the promotion.

"We were really impressed with our first-year turnout, " Mantle said. The paper "definitely" plans to continue the promotion in the years to come, she said.

And people already are participating in this year's drawing, with receipts brought in last week for the first tickets entered.

For every $50 on a receipt from a participating merchant, the shopper can earn one chance at winning the TV, from Northern Home Essentials, with a maximum of five entries per receipt.

The merchants participating this year are:

  • Bearly Square Quilting;
  • Ben Franklin Crafts;
  • Bing 'N' Bob's;
  • Creative Leisure;
  • Char's Family Dining;
  • Havre Ford;
  • Heirloom Jewelers;
  • Holden's Hot Wheels;
  • J. M. Donoven Designs in Fine Jewelry;
  • R-New Trading Post;
  • The Shack Radio Shack dealer;
  • McDonalds;
  • North Central Auto Parts;
  • Northern Home Essentials; • Stromberg's Sinclair and E-Fish Hunt Sports.

Several of the merchants also participated in last year's promotion.

Registration for the drawing began last week for receipts dated Wednesday, Nov. 23, or later, with the last day to register Friday, Dec. 23. Store names and the date must be visible on the receipts, brought in to the Havre Daily News between 8 a. m. and 5 p. m. — Monday through Friday, to receive tickets for the drawing.

The drawing will be held Tuesday, Dec. 27. Participants must be 18 or older to receive tickets for the drawing, and employees of the Havre Daily and participating merchants, and the families of the employees, are not eligible.
