Runoff leads to discolored water in Havre

Havre residents may have noticed a slight change in their water, with some discoloration of what is coming out of the tap.

Havre Public Works Director Dave Peterson said this morning that the color is nothing of concern — higher levels of chemicals used to treat the water is leading to the change.

"It's that time of year that we've got the water coming down off Big Sandy Creek, " Peterson said, adding that the level of the creek — and accompanying detritus with the runoff — is as high as he remembers seeing it.

The runoff increases the amount of material that needs to be treated at the Havre Water Treatment Plant. The higher levels of chemicals used to treat the water also ends up eating off some accumulation of minerals in the pipes used to transport the water to taps in Havre, Peterson said.

That leads to discolored water, and has been known to lead to some change in flavor or odor as well.

"There's nothing harmful in the water, " Peterson said. "The water is fine, it's just what's in the pipes. "
