Canadian visitor had hoped for better

Editor:

A weekend ago, it was a Canadian holiday. So for our weekend, we decided to visit your town, as we do at least three or four times a year.

The disturbing thing we did this time is bring our Canadian money instead of changing to American funds. Bad mistake!

At least three clerks, at separate locations, looked at my $50 bill and said "what's that?" To which I replied, "That is fifty dollars!"

They gave me this stunned look and said, "Oh, we won't take that!"

Well let me tell you. I was floored.

Won't take it? Is it because our money is worth more right now? What about all the years we visited, and it cost us more to do it?

Get your American fund in exchange for Canadian funds?

Gary & Leo's didn't even blink and even gave the correct change, including the proper exchange — thank you to them — they made my frustration ease somewhat.

In strategic locations, I saw signs that say "Welcome Canadians," but the ones that did accept our money would only give par — even the Northern Winz Casino.

To me, that does not say "welcome" in my book!

I am sorry, because we have always enjoyed our visits to your town, but we are truly wondering how soon we will return as we were sorely disappointed by the treatment we received !

A disillusioned Canadian,
