The Havre High boys and girls track and field teams just keep trucking along, with little breaks in between.
Just a couple days after competing at the A.R.M. meet in Whitefish, the Central A Blue Ponies are back on the road. Tuesday the Ponies will be in Glasgow for the Annual Top 10 track meet, bringing in some of the top Class A, Class B and Class C track and field athletes in the region. The meet will get started Tuesday night at 4:30 p.m.
"The Top 10 is always a fun meet to go to," Havre High head coach Trevor VanCampen said. "The kids that are there are fully committed to hard work in practice and are really buying into what the coaches are teaching them. The kids that are going deserve to go, they have worked hard and we are honored to take the kids that have qualified."
Michael Richards (110 hurdles), Mason Case (100 and 200), Garrett Aguillard (800, 1600 and 3200), Marc Klimas (3200), Thurman Holdsclaw (pole vault), Matt Emge (pole vault) and Thomas Gruber (pole vault) all qualified for the boys. And for the girls, Sammy Evans (100, long jump, triple jump and high jump), Ashlynn Van Voast (800), Peyton Filius (800 and 1600), Skylar Vukasin (high jump), Kaylie Gilman (high jump) and Lacey Waid (pole vault) all qualified for the Ponies. Both the long (Filius, VanVoast, Evans and Vukasin) and short (Filius, Vukasin Jennifer Nordgulen and Van Voast) relay teams qualified for the girls, while the boys short (Tyson Kultgen, Emge, Case and Holdsclaw) relay team qualified.
Some of the first time qualifiers include Vukasin, Emge, Gruber, Nordgulen and possibley Kade Rismon. Rismon isn't in just yet, but did throw 42-8 in the shot put over the weekend in Whitefish, but didn't place. The mark is good enough to get into the Top 10, but VanCampen won't know for sure until later on.
Anything can happen at the Top 10, but each and every one of the Blue Ponies have a shot at placing on Tuesday. But some have led the way all season long.
Case enters the meet as the No. 1 qualifier in the 200 (23.0) and the No. 2 in the 100 (11.2). The boys short relay team is also the No. 1 qualifier (45.49), while Klimas is the No. 5 3200 runner (10:37.10). For the girls, Evans is the No. 1 long jumper (16-9), No. 1 triple jumper (35-31) and the No. 1 high jumper (5-2). VanVoast is the No. 1 qualifer in the 800 (2:31.51), and Filius is the No. 3 qualifier in the 800 (2:34.0).
But even with all of the qualifiers the Ponies bring in, HHS is taking it easy. They had a very busy weekend, and extremely competitive month between all the meets and practices. Not all of the athletes who qualified for multiple events will compete in all of them. Evans will compete in the 100, high jump and tiple jump, while Filius will only run the 800. And Aguillard will only be running the 3200.
But the Ponies are still excited to compete. They have a solid group of competitors, and know what kind of honor it is to compete in Glasgow.
"We are excited," VanCampen said. "We are taking a great group of kids. For some of them this is their second, third or fourth time going, but for a few, this is just their first time qualifying. That is always exciting because they get to see the other side of track, and are being rewarded with a chance to compete against the top in the region."
The Top 10 meet will start at 4:30 p.m.in Glasgow.
