HHS golfers finish strong at Old Works

The Havre High boys golf team, as well as one Blue Pony girl wrapped up the 2012 high school season with two tough rounds of golf on one of the more difficult courses in Montana.

Blue Pony players took part in the 2012 Class A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda. The HHS boys shot a two-day, team-total of 737 to finish in seventh place overall. Havre's Central A rival, Belgrade captured the state boys championship with a 647. Whitefish was second and Miles City took third.

On the girls side, the Ponies only sent Boston Swensen to play individually, and she did quite well. Swensen shot a sparkling round of 97 on Friday, which put her inside the Top 10 after 18 holes. She followed that up with a 107 on Saturday for a two-day total of 204. Swensen wound up just five strokes outside the Top 15.

Individually, the HHS boys got solid performances all the way around. Freshman Jerod Boles and senior David Denny each finished with a team-best 187 for 36 holes. Boles shot 91 on Friday and 83 Saturday, while Denny was the opposite, going 93-91. Senior Spencer Ross had the low round for the Ponies, carding an 89 in Friday's opening round. Ross shot 97 on Saturday for a 36-hole total of 186. Freshman Jeff Miller was consistent, shooting 93-94 to finish at 187 and senior Ramsey Drew shot 98 on Friday but improved by five strokes Saturday with a 93 to finish at 191.

Bobby Frank of Sidney shot a total of 154 to take medalist honors on the boys side, while Livingston's Christal Tokash beat Whitefish' Erin Tabish in a playoff for medalist honors on the girls side. Polson captured the girls state championship, while Laurel was second and Whitefish third.
